Well, it’s that time of year again; back to school = head lice season.  The best thing you can do for your family is to be prepared. Perform weekly head checks on your children weekly with a good metal comb.

The facts of head lice:

  1. Head lice actually prefer clean heads.  Although, they’ll take anything they can get, in a pinch.
  2. No one can really pinpoint when and where a lice problem starts, the “Blame Game” is never fun and can cause hurt feelings.
  3. People with color treated hair can still get head lice, grey, brunet, blonde or carrot-tops, are all equal targets.
  4. Nits(lice eggs) are harmless once removed from the head (they cannot hatch).
  5. Once removed from the head, live Lice (bugs)die within 48 hours.
  6. Lice have become resistant to the Over-The-Counter pesticide treatments.
  7. Kids are happy to see each other and show that in various ways like hugging (I know, weird) which suits the lice just fine since they crawl quickly. Flying and jumping aren’t their strong suits.
  8. A mature fertilized louse (10 days old) can lay up 3-5 eggs a day twice daily, which will hatch in a week.  Times that by 20+ kids and dozens of hugs and hat mix ups and well, let’s just say the lice are having a party.
  9. The same mysterious diagnosis that takes place when you read about a rare disease and suddenly think you have it, also takes place when someone just mentions the word lice.  Suddenly your head will start itching and you’ll be sure you have them.  Your head is itching now, isn’t it?

Camp time is one of the worst times of the year for head lice. Head lice cases have hit epidemic proportions as the over the counter products have become less and less effective. Campers are in close quarters and love to take pictures. Have you ever seen your child(ren) in a photo where their head is touching another child’s head? Head to head, or hair to hair, contact is the number one way to contract head lice. Another good way to contract head lice is to share helmets. We often tell our clients to buy their child(ren) their own helmets to bring to camp.

Lice Lifters® will check your head, kill and remove nits and live lice, and send you home with a follow-up treatment plan. They are also a retail store that sells their own The Nit Nanny® Product Line.

Lice Lifters® uses the revolutionary, FDA- cleared LouseBuster™ device for the treatment of lice and nits. The LouseBuster™ device provides a treatment that is non-chemical, effective and fast.  It kills the nits using heat, and therefore, it effectively kills head lice and lice eggs without any dangerous or harsh chemicals.  In addition, the treatment can be done in half the time of a traditional comb out.

Happy camping!

We often receive many questions here at Lice Lifters as to what is the difference between us and our nit-picking competition.  The story below will provide a good idea on how we work, One Quick Treatment. Done!

Last week we had a family come into our Lice Lifters® of Lafayette Hill Treatment Center be treated for head lice. Upon their arrival, we asked the mom if she had used any treatments prior to coming in.  She said that the previous week they were unsuccessfully treated by a nitpicker, or comb-out service.  A woman performed the service “in the comfort of their home”.   The Nitpicker combed-out the mom and 2 children with a nit removal mousse, using no killing agent for the bugs.

The nitpicker gave the family no instructions, tools, or post treatment instructions before she left. Over the weekend while the mom was getting her girls ready for bed, she found live adult lice. The mom called the nitpicker, who said that she would come back to perform another comb-out treatment. The nitpicker would charge additional fees to come back and “re-treat”.  Instead of having the woman re-treat, the mom called Lice Lifters® to help with the infestation.

When the family arrived at Lice Lifters®, we checked the family and both girls had nits and live lice. We treated with our FDA-cleared LouseBuster, which dehydrated all the nits and killed most of the live lice.  After the LouseBuster treatment our technicians preformed a comb-out of the dehydrated nits and dead lice.  We sent the mom home with the non-toxic, pesticide free The Nit Nanny® Lice Solution to kill any live lice that may have remained.

The Lice Lifters Triple Threat Treatment works the first time.  We save families time and aggravation.  The next time you need a treatment for lice, check us out:  We are here for you.

As teenagers everywhere prepare for prom season and graduation here are a few tips from Lice Lifters Treatment Centers to prevent your teens from contracting head lice. We often see girls putting their heads together in photos.  Most head lice cases stem from head to head or “hair to hair” contact.  Perform a combing head check the next day on a wet head with a The Nit Nanny® Nit Removal Comb.

How you get head lice
  • More than 90% of head lice cases come from head to head contact with an infected person (hair touching hair)
  • Hugs (don’t give up hugging, just do regular head checks)
  • Children working together in small spaces where heads touch (books/hand held video games)
  • Cloth seats in the movie theater, on a bus, train, or plane
  • Sharing dress up clothes, hats or hooded sweatshirts
  • Lying on someone’s bed/pillow
  • Sharing brushes or hair accessories
  • Using someone’s towel
  • Sharing a batting or safety helmet
  • Trying on clothes or hats in stores

So, do you let your children play with children who have been known to have head lice?

The answer is yes, but when they come home from the play date perform a thorough combing head check on your child(ren). Our The Nit Nanny Nit Removal Comb is an effective head lice detection and nit removal tool. We cannot shield our children from contracting head lice completely but we can take steps for prevention. In addition, using The Nit Nanny Mint Detangler Spray daily as a lice deterrent is also good for peace of mind.

At Lice Lifters we also suggest girls wear their hair pulled back in a bun or braid in order to lessen the chances of contracting head lice. A louse is transferred via head to head or “hair to hair’ contact.  Head lice cannot fly or jump from person to person.

Lastly, as spring helmet season is upon us, we suggest children have their own helmets for sports and biking. We suggest marking the helmet(s) clearly with your children’s name.

Happy Spring!

As parents, we have all worried and wondered about it: head lice. Just hearing the word makes you itchy and stressed. What parent doesn’t dread getting that note sent home in their child’s backpack that there have been cases of head lice in the classroom?

With winter being a particularly active time for head lice outbreaks, thanks primarily to extra clothing like hats and coats providing a convenient way for head lice to spread; we bring you some tips to help you survive an outbreak without losing your mind.

Lice (Pediculus capitis), tiny insects about the size of a sesame seed, are hardy creatures. They have been around since humans have been on this earth.  Head lice do not discriminate between male and female, if a person has more money or less money, young or old, clean or dirty. Lice need warm hosts to feed and reproduce.  Head lice are parasitic bugs that live only off of the blood of humans and not on dogs or cats.

They are most often found in the hair (head lice), but there are also body lice. Lice move fast and tend to avoid light. In school children, lice are easily spread due to the close contact. Adult lice can live on the human head for up to 30 days. It is important to check your school age children regularly for lice as part of good grooming habits.  As creepy and crawly as they are to us, they can be fought off.

With the holiday season comes a new burst of head lice cases. Don’t let your head become a new host for head lice.

In order to protect your family from this unwanted gift over the holiday season  there are a few pre-cautions you can take. For girls, wear hair pulled back and use our The Nit Nanny Mint Detangler Spray before leaving the house as a deterrent. Of course boys are not immune from contracting head lice and should use The Nit Nanny Mint Detangler Spray as well as a deterrent.

Secondly, never share hats, coats, scarves, helemts or other personal items.

If you receive “that call” from a friend or relative that they have head lice and you or one of your family members were with them recently, perform a combing head check immediately on your entire family using our The Nit Nanny Lice & Nit Removal Comb. In addition, our The Nit Nanny Lice Solution Treatment can be applied as a pre-cautionary measure to treat live lice.
